When OWC gives an estimate/description of the quality you can trust them on that. Assuming you have a stock Mac Pro 4,1 you could replace your existing 4-Core 2.66 GHz Xeon W3520 with a 3.33 GHz 6 Core Xeon W3680 yourself.

You will need to update the EFI in your Mac Pro so it thinks it's a Mac Pro 5,1 to use the later Xeon CPU's.

Overall for a machine that has been around since at least 2012 and seen use I can't complain about the quality. Why don't you look at upgrading your CPU as suggested. There are a couple of small scrapes and a small divot in the case but nothing I can't live with. Have several upgrades in the planning like replacing the system drive with an ssd and adding other drives inside. I really love how I can update things in this machine h/w wise unlike my old iMac. It came with Sierra on it and was easy to backdate to Yosemite 10.10.5 because all the audio software I use isn't ready for Sierra. Booted right up and is fairly quiet - can hear the fans when the room is quiet but even then they're not all that loud.

I used to be a professional movie sound editor, but now I just dabble with the technology. I managed to do it by following a couple of guides I found by googling. Hire a technician if you're not comfortable with handling delicate and expensive computer parts. If it looks like it requires the X5680 for dual processors-with the upgrading costing about $3k per box-or if you need more than 24gig RAM then do that. If that works then upgrade all the others. If you don't need additional RAM I'd just upgrade one render system with two W3680s (see my earlier post for my reasoning) at a cost of about $1400 per render box. If I were you I'd upgrade the firmware on all the machines. I see that other are getting the X5600s to work in their upgraded system but I don't know if the X5600s are required for dual processor systems. I understand that the W0 won't address more than 24gig RAM and the X0 can address much more. The firmware update seems to work for most of the 4.1 machines. The screenshot of 'about this Mac' which he has sent says '2 x 3. I believe your RnD has been done in this thread for one of your options. Ive just bought a second Mac Pro 4,1 which is a dual processor 12-core with the intentions of swapping the 6-core tray in my current unit.
